This year’s 63rd Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony was expected to take place on January 31st but got postponed due to the increased cases of Covid-19.
The award show organizers have not approved a date yet however, sources say they intend to hold the event in March.
The Recording Academy decided to delay the date for the event after SAG-AFTRA and Producers Guild recommended to “temporary hold on in-person production”.
“Southern California hospitals are facing a crisis the likes of which we have never seen before. Patients are dying in ambulances waiting for treatment because hospital emergency rooms are overwhelmed. This is not a safe environment for in-person production right now,” SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris stated on Monday.
Harvey Mason Jr., Chair & Interim President/CEO of the Recording Academy; Jack Susan, Executive Vice President, Specials, Music, Live Events and Alternative Programming, CBS; and Ben Winston, GRAMMY Awards Executive Producer, Fulwell 73 Productions released a joint statement about the postponement of the annual event.
“After thoughtful conversations with health experts, our host and artists scheduled to appear, we are rescheduling the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards® to be broadcast Sunday, March 14, 2021. The deteriorating COVID situation in Los Angeles, with hospital services being overwhelmed, ICUs having reached capacity, and new guidance from state and local governments have all led us to conclude that postponing our show was the right thing to do. Nothing is more important than the health and safety of those in our music community and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly on producing the show.
We want to thank all of the talented artists, the staff, our vendors and especially this year’s nominees for their understanding, patience and willingness to work with us as we navigate these unprecedented times.”
This year’s Grammy event originally planned to have a limited number of people attending by having only performers on-site during the show.
Audiences and nominated artists would have not been allowed to attend the ceremony. Instead they would have appeared and accepted their awards virtually. It would have been similar to the 2020 Emmy Award show.
Trevor Noah was set to host the 63rd Annual event however, it is still unclear whether he will still be the host.
Among the big artists that led to the most Grammy nominations this year are Beyonce by having nine nominees following Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift, and Roddy Rich with 6 nominations each.
