Apple’s Big Announcement: OS X El Capitan, iOS 9, watchOS, and Apple Music

Apple WWDC Press ConferenceSAN FRANCISCO, California- Apple’s 26th annual WWDC 2015 took place this morning where major announcements were made. The developers conference was one of the most global conferences ever.

“WWDC15 features over 100 sessions and 150 labs focused on the latest technologies for Mac and iOS.”

OS X El Capitan

One of the first updates announced was the OS X El Capitan. It’s predecessor OS X Yosemite had the fastest adoption rate (55%) of any PC operating system in history. OS X El Capital offers smarter ways to do what you do most. The thought behind El Capitan was to focus on the experience and performance of users. New features were announced such as Pinned Sites in Safari, Spotlight, Split View, and window management. Pinning sites in Safari will now be easier than ever. Another important feature announced was the muting of audio that comes on from sites that you are unaware of. Split View is also another important feature that will allow users to to automatically position two apps side by side, using every pixel of your Mac display. OS X El Capitan offers a more refined experience for Mac users. It will be available as a developer beta today (6/8) and as a public beta this summer. OS X El Capitan will be available free for worldwide download this fall.

The application Metal is ideal for gamers and game developers. Metal is great for games delivering richer onscreen graphics and faster performance in games.

iOS 9

iOS 9 is the newest release of Apple’s mobile operating system. It was announced that with “iOS 9, Siri is up to 40% faster and 40% more accurate.” This is great for Apple users. There is also more topics you can ask Siri about, such as finding specific photos and videos. The objective is to make your devices great assistants. Your device can anticipate what you want to do next based on your location, the time, what app you have open, or what you’re connected to. For example if you plug in your headphones or connect to your car, iPhone can suggest a recent playlist. iOS 9 developer beta is available today, and the public beta will be available in July. iOS 9 will be available for everyone this fall.

Apple Pay

It was announced that Discover will be joining Apple Pay this fall. More and more of the biggest and best brands are using Apple Pay. In the fall, Square will also be launching a new reading that will enable millions of local and small businesses to accept Apple Pay. Apple Pay will be accepted at over 1 million locations in the U.S. next month. Another major announcement about Apple Pay was that it will launch across the United Kingdom this July.


Apple announced a new application-News. News is designed to be interactive. It keeps all your favorite publishers, topics, and genres in one place. It also has the latest stories, articles, and posts. It has over a million topics to choose from, including from the greatest sources.


In order to keep up with demands, Apple announced ways of iPad Multitasking. Switching between apps has been redesigned with iOS 9. Slide Over lets you open a second app without leaving the one you’re in. Picture in Picture scales a video down in size so you can keep watching a TV show while answering an email.


Native apps are coming to Apple Watch with the new version of watchOS. The Timepiece allows users to change their watch face. They can choose from photo face, photo album face and to the all new time-lapse face. With Complications, Apple announced app developers can make their own complications. They can customize their watch to show sport scores, flight info, and a variety of other templates. Time Travel is also another important feature that was announced. By rotating the Digital Crown, Time Travel lets you see things like upcoming events and temperatures. The watch can also be used in a nightstand view, when on its side. There is an alarm feature implemented as well. Developer beta available today. Available in the fall for everyone.

Apple Music

Apple’s major announcement of the day was Apple Music, the next chapter in music. Apple Music aims to give fans and artist alike an easier way of to be connected through music. Apple Music is a revolutionary music service, a 24/7 global radio, and connecting fans with artists. With Apple Music you still have your iTunes library. And a lot more.

Apple Music will have a groundbreaking 24/7 global radio station featuring Beats 1. It will be “broadcasting nonstop to over 100 countries from LA, New York, and London.” It will also feature the world’s best voices, like Zane Lowe, a masterful interviewer and an influential musical figure. Apple Music gives artists a single place to connect with fans.

Drake was introduced to share the way Apple Music will help him and his career. He shared that through Apple Music he is now more reachable for his fans. Apple Music will also make it easier for him to share the new album he has been working on.

WWDC concluded with the performance by the hot new artist, The Weeknd. The Weeknd performed the world premier of “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Apple Music will be available June 30 in over 100 countries with iOS 8.4 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It will also be available on Windows and on Android later this fall. Apple Music will be available for $9.99 per month, with the first three months free.
