Becky Hammon and the Spurs edge past Phoenix to become Las Vegas Summer League Champions

NBA Summer LeagueThe seventh seeded Spurs led by coach Becky Hammon defeated the eighth seeded Suns, 93-90, on Monday.

Hammon is the first female to head coach and win a championship in the summer league.

The Spurs bested the Nets, Celtics and Hawks to advance to the final game.

Spurs’ Jonathan Simmons poured in 23 points, shooting 7-14 from the field and 9-12 from the free throw line.

He received MVP of the final game honors.

Kyle Anderson, UCLA alumnus and the 30th pick of last year’s draft, was named the Summer League MVP.

He averaged 21 points, 6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 27.3 minutes per game for the Spurs.

The Spurs only loss in Las Vegas came against the New York Knicks.

Anderson scored a game high 23 points in the loss.

New Orleans Pelicans’ Seth Curry, brother of Steph Curry, led the league in points.

He averaged 24.3 points along with 2.7 assists and 3.2 steals per game.
