To all Star Wars fans, the galaxy’s smoothest gambler Billy Dee Williams is making his surprise return for Star Wars: Episode IX.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources have confirmed that Williams may finally be reprising his role as Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars latest film set to kick-start production later this summer.
This will be Williams’ big homecoming to playing Lando for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
He first made his debut when he took on the role in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. Since last seen in the film franchise back in 1983, he returned to the role various times in recent years by voicing in Star Wars video games and cartoon series.
The universe’s iconic character made a significant appearance as Donald Glover portrayed a younger version of Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story earlier this year.
Rumors about Williams’ big return sparked when the 81-year-old actor revealed a new fitness regimen similar to what Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill embarked on when they had to prepare for their roles. There was even more speculation as he canceled an upcoming comic convention appearance due to a conflict with his movie schedule.
There is still plenty of mysteries surrounding the new film. Episode IX is under wraps for now, and it is uncertain how he will fit into the narrative in J.J. Abram’s film.
Abrams began a new chapter in the Star Wars story with 2015’s The Force Awakens. The new sequel trilogy will reach its end in 2019 with Episode IX.
While Keri Russell is one of the new additions to the cast in her action-heavy role, the film will reunite stars Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Adam Driver.
We’ll have to wait and see how Lando’s big comeback plays out in the new film when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on Dec. 20, 2019.
