FULLERTON, CA— Preseason polls are in and Cal State Fullerton pitchers Thomas Eshelman and Justin Garza are on a roll. On Tuesday both were named to the 2015 preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List announced by USA Baseball.
The organization is now one step ahead in recognizing the top amateur baseball player in the country in a trophy ceremony on June 23 in Los Angeles sponsored by Major League Baseball. Moreover, ESPNU will be at Goodwin Field on May 21st and 22nd to broadcast the first two games of the final series for the Big West Conference against rivals Long Beach State.
Eshelman and Garza are the only competitors from the Big West Conference to be on the 50-man Golden Spikes Award Watch List. The Titans have not won an award in this list since 1995.  Previous award winners include:  Tim Wallach in 1976, Phil Nevin 1992, and Mark Kotsay 1995.
Nontheless, it is no surprise that pitchers Garza and Eshelman are on the list. It appears this season, opponents won’t be able to get pass defense, with pitchers like Justin Garza and Thomas Eshelman on the roster anything can be possible. Thomas Eshelman is entering his junior year with an impressive 1.69 ERA, and a record of 20-6. In his two seasons with the Titans, he has managed to reckoned 182 strikeouts and 11 walks in 32 starts, according to Fullerton Athletics. Justin Garza, is not too far behind, on May 23rd, Garza became the fourth pitcher to throw a no-hitter as he stopped CSUN from the win. Garza’s record of 17-6, and 2.49 ERA has certainly managed to make the Titans an unstoppable force on the mound.
