The Netflix series, Quién Mató a Sara (Who Killed Sara?), created by Jose Ignacio Valenzuela and featuring a powerhouse of A-list telenovela actors, is returning for a second season on May 19th. Just weeks after its season one premiered on Netflix that catapulted the murder mystery series into the Top 10 list of must watch shows.

The series follows Alex Guzman (Mariano Cardona), who was just released from prison after serving 18-years for the murder of his sister Sara (Ximena Lamadrid). The kicker thought is that Sara’s death was an accident and Alex willingly admitted to being responsible, after having been pressured by his friends father, Cézar Lazcano (Ginés García Millán), who assured Alex that he would be okay and promised to take care of Alex’s ailing mother as a thank you for his sacrifice.

Unbeknown to Alex, Sara was expecting a child from his best friend, Rodolfo Lazcano (Alejandro Nones) so the evidence fabricated against him showed that Alex deliberately sabotaged his sister’s parachute after finding out about the pregnancy. He was sentenced to 30 years but ended up serving 18 for good behavior. Now a free man, Alex is wasting no time in finding out who really is responsible for the death of his sister.

The 10-episode series is set to the tone of an Agatha Christie quote: “very few of us are what we seem.” Each episode focuses on the members of the Lazcano family and those around them who might have had a motive for wanting the young Sara dead. Through a series of flashbacks viewers not only see potential motives but also get the idea that Sara may have been killed for more than just a teen pregnancy.

Her murderer ended up being none other than Mariana Lazcano (Claudia Ramírez), the mother of Rodolfo Lazcano. Mariana is a devoted woman of faith – she wears a Cilice belt around her thighs – who believed that Sara’s pregnancy was the worst thing to happen to her son; that was until an employee of the family informed her that that child was not Rodolfo’s but Cézars. That revelation, that her husband was having an affair with their teenage sons girlfriend and got her pregnant, made her motive for murder even stronger.

That was until Alex uncovers a diary hidden in the walls of Sara’s old room in the final episode. He looks through the pages and he realizes that he made a mistake; that he was wrong. Still unaware of his sister’s killer, he ponders that Sara’s death and murder might be have to do with more than what he thought.

That is what season two will attempt to uncover when the series returns in May. After Alex discovers the diary and scans through the pages filled with horrific images and alarming passages, he sees a hand sketched drawing of their backyard with a grave-maker. As if following a map, Alex goes to where the grave-maker is on the drawing and uncovers a human skull.

Everyone appeared to have reasons for not wanting Sara around. It wasn’t until Alex revealed the true parentage of Sara’s baby, that everyone agreed that Cézar must have been the one to sabotage her parachute. But Sara was not just the poor teenage girl who cheated on her rich boyfriend with his father; she was also a witness.

The Lazcanos are owners of one of the most luxurious casinos in all of Mexico. But in the basement of the casino is an underground business – the trafficking of young women. What she witnesses was the tourtour and murder of a young woman, whose father was cellmates with Alex years later, on video tape in Cézars office along with many other tapes of women. Unbeknown to Cézar and his men, Sara takes one of the videos with her and asks her friend to hide it and give it to the police if something should ever happen to her.

Her friend Marifer, played by Mexican actress Litzy, hands the tape over to Alex who decides to hold off on taking the tape to the authorities since you can’t see the face of the man in the video, but holds on to it regardless. Marifer is also the mysterious texter who has been sending Alex messages about Sara and the Lazcando family.

The post credit scene of the final episode serves as the trailer for the second season with Alex asking around for information about his sister and a former friend – the same one she gave the tape to – coming forward with shocking allegations about Sara’s behavior before the accident, which may lead to clues as to who the body in the backyard belongs too and that if it’s possible that Mariana was not the only one who wanted Sara dead.
