Chivas USA and Vancouver Tie In First Half

Chivas USA start strong but Vancouver’s defense holds the Goat to tie in first half

The game started under a cloudy and cold night in Carson with the roar of the Union Ultras, a supporting group for the Chivas banging their drums to pump the hometown team looking for the teams first win of the season. Vancouver Whitecaps started the first half with the ball.

The team tried to find openings in the first three minutes of play with a shot on goal that went wide of the net. As in last week it seems the team has had a hard time finding their side of the field. In the ninth minute of the game captain Nick LaBrocca found Pete Vagenas down the field but Joe Cannon was able to disrupt the play in front of the goalie box.

In the earlier 13th minute Chivas again tries to attack the net with a pass down field by Ryan Smith but was unable to find the target as Cannon is able to break up the play. The Whitecaps have started the first primarily on defense as Chivas has been able to keep the ball on offense.

A handball by Juan Marques Davidson of the Whitecaps leads to a free kick by Laurent Courtois that hits the Whitecaps defensive wall in front of the net. It was the third attempt at the net for Chivas to find the teams first goal of the 2012 season.

Smith finds an opening again in 20th minute to take a shot but Cannon easily stops the attempt. Vancouver will finally take on to offense in the 26th minute but unable to find the net with the shot by Lee Young-Pyo the first shot on goal by Vancouver un the game.

At 29:57 with a dazzling display of dribbling down the pitch Davidson is able to find an opening into the box but gets the ball stolen away. When Chivas Casey Townsend on the offensive takes a shot just above the stretched hand of Whitecaps goalie Cannon missing the net by inches.

In 34:14 of the game Oswald Minga recieves a yellow card when an illegal tackle was made on the Whitecaps. It is the first yellow first yellow card of the game handed out by the officials. Vancouvers goalie Cannon at 39:37 is taken out of the game due to players he was having with his knee earlier that has turned serious to end his night at goal. He is replaced by Brad Knighton.

In the replacement it does not fire the Whitecaps attack as Chivas Courtois takes a shot on goal by is blocked by the fresh Knighton. Though with 1 minute of stoppage time and the rain begins to fall the first half ends with both team unable to find the net. Chivas end the half strong with Vancouver starting an offensive strike that turns cold after goalie Cannon was taken out.
