In a pandemic world, nothing is set in stone, especially when it comes to the entertainment industry, which has had to pivot from big box office weekends to streaming online to hybrid movie openings. However, despite all of the influx, Warner Bros has announced that The “Crazy Rich Asians” franchise will not only be getting a sequel, but the series will also have a spinoff movie.

According to Deadline, the untitled spinoff film will focus on the character of Astrid, who ended her marriage in the original film, reuniting with her ex-flame, Charlie played by Harry Shum Jr. While no director has been tied to the film just yet, Jason Kim will write the film with John M. Chu, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and John Penotti producing the project. Rumor has it that both the spinoff and the second installment of “Crazy Rich Asians,” which will focus on Rachel and Nick, are tied to Kevin Kwan’s book, “China Rich Girlfriend.”

“China Rich Girlfriend” is the second book in a series of three by the claimed Asian author. Warner Brothers have also bought the rights to develop Kwan’s third book, “Rich People Problems.” That could mean that there would be a possible fourth movie in the franchise.
