SAN DIEGO - Paramount+ is bringing The Lodge back to San Diego Comic-Con, transforming Happy Does Bar (340 Fifth Ave.) into a free immersive experience celebrating some of the streamer’s biggest franchises.

This year’s experience features themed environments inspired by Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, South Park, UFC, and more. Guests can step aboard the U.S.S. Port Galley, explore the Republic City Marketplace, and make a stop in South Park, all while enjoying themed food and drinks, interactive games, exclusive photo opportunities, and customizable swag to take home.

The experience lasts about 50 minutes and is free to attend. Reservations are recommended, though a standby line will be available each day for those who can’t secure a ticket in advance.

The Lodge is open to fans of all ages. Children ages 4 and under do not need a reservation when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Fans under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times, and alcoholic beverages will only be available to guests 21 and older with a valid ID.

Reservations are currently sold out. Fans can try their luck in the standby line during operating hours.

SAN DIEGO - Disney Entertainment Television is bringing a packed lineup of panels, offsite experiences, and exclusive merchandise to San Diego Comic-Con, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians, King of the Hill, Futurama, The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, and more taking center stage.

Leading the offsite lineup is the Percy Jackson and the Olympians activation in the Gaslamp Triangle near Baja Rick’s and the trolley station. Fans will enter through Poseidon’s trident before choosing one of three paths inspired by Percy, Annabeth, or Thalia. The experience is inspired by the upcoming third season, based on Rick Riordan’s The Titan’s Curse.

The activation features themed food and drinks inspired by Futurama and King of the Hill, including Fry’s “100 Days of Cold Brew” and Bobby Hill’s Robata Chane yakitori. Fans can also explore interactive environments, hunt for hidden Easter eggs, and shop for exclusive merchandise.

Hulu Animayhem will be open Thursday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. You’ll find it at Palm Trees Garden in the Gaslamp Quarter—or, if you’re a local, that grassy area next to the Hilton Gaslamp.

Midsummer Scream and Paramount Scares will dedicate a weekend of programming to the 30th anniversary of Wes Craven’s 1996 film “Scream” during this year’s convention, organizers announced.

The three-day event runs Aug. 7-9 at the Long Beach Convention Center and will include vendors, more than a dozen haunted attractions in the Hall of Shadows, and panels, presentations and performances across seven stages, according to organizers.

Several cast members from the original “Scream” are scheduled to appear for autographs, photos and meet-and-greets throughout the weekend, including Matthew Lillard, who played Stu Macher; Skeet Ulrich, who played Billy Loomis; David Arquette, who played Dewey Riley; and Jamie Kennedy, who played Randy Meeks. Stunt actor Lee Waddell and Joseph Whipp, who played Sheriff Burke, are also expected to attend.

A limited number of private meet-and-greets will be offered with Roger L. Jackson, the voice of the film’s Ghostface character, including the option to record a custom voicemail or audio greeting. Photo opportunities and the Jackson meet-and-greet can be booked through Pose Photo-Ops.

As part of the anniversary programming, Paramount Scares and the horror magazine Fangoria will recreate Bradley Video, the fictional video store featured in “Scream,” on the convention floor. Fangoria staff will operate the store and offer film recommendations, along with Ghostface photo opportunities and merchandise giveaways.

Two panels are planned around the anniversary. On Aug. 8, Lillard will host a “Scream” 30th anniversary panel featuring additional guests. On Aug. 9, a panel titled “The Sound of Scream” will examine the franchise’s music and audio design. Panelists are set to include composer Marco Beltrami, Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas, Jackson, producer Marianne Maddalena and music supervisor Ed Gerrard.

Organizers also plan to sell a Midsummer Scream-exclusive edition of Fangoria magazine featuring a Ghostface cover, along with archival articles and coverage of the convention’s 2026 guest lineup.

Weekend and Gold Bat VIP passes for the event have sold out, organizers said. Single-day passes remain available at midsummerscream.com, though organizers said those tickets are also close to selling out.

This panel is going to be bigger than Mega Maid bringing the stars and forces behind the franchise to the big stage for the first time. The original cast will join some of the new cast in what will surely be a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Among what will most likely be many laughs and surprises will be the first footage from the film. Remember, space will be very limited so get there early and dump your matched luggage.

The film premieres on April 23, 2027, and will be here faster than you can say “Ludicrous Speed!” Until then, may the Schwartz be with yoooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu!

Blink-182 and Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. announced a wide-ranging collaboration bringing together the punk rock band with PAC-MAN, the companies said Thursday.

The partnership coincides with the 25th anniversary of blink-182’s 2001 album “Take Off Your Pants and Jacket.” The band teamed up with Bandai Namco Entertainment on a collection of exclusive merchandise available only at Comic-Con.

The collection includes a limited-edition, numbered blink-182 x PAC-MAN Comic-Con vinyl record produced by Blood Records. It also features a blink-182 version of the PAC-MAN x 7-Eleven T-shirt that bassist Mark Hoppus wore at Coachella in 2023 — a moment that blended blink-182’s humor, arcade nostalgia and convenience-store culture.

The items will be sold at the blink-182 x PAC-MAN booth, No. 1415, at the San Diego Convention Center during San Diego Comic-Con, which runs Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, July 26.

The arcade-themed booth will feature a stylized animated depiction of the band, co-branded arcade cabinets and a claw machine stocked with PAC-MAN plush toys and other blink-182 items as prizes. The exclusive vinyl includes the songs “The Rock Show” and “First Date,” both top 10 modern rock hits.

Visitors will also be able to take photos with PAC-MAN and Bunny, who are scheduled to appear at the booth during show hours.

Blink-182 and Bandai Namco Entertainment said they plan to reveal further details about the collaboration, including additional limited-edition merchandise.

PAC-MAN, first released as a coin-operated arcade cabinet, is one of the longest-running and most influential video game franchises in history. In the game, players guide PAC-MAN through mazes, eating dots while avoiding colorful ghosts that pursue him through increasingly difficult levels.

The game’s popularity spawned sequels, a merchandising program, a hit music single and two animated television series. Guinness World Records has recognized PAC-MAN with several titles, including “Most Successful Coin-Operated Game.”

The franchise continues to release new console and mobile games. In 2025, PAC-MAN marked its 45th anniversary with a series of partnerships, activations and product launches.

SAN DIEGO — In just a few days, thousands of comic book fans, cosplayers, and pop culture enthusiasts will descend on downtown San Diego for San Diego Comic-Con. From the San Diego Convention Center to the Gaslamp Quarter and beyond, the city transforms into the epicenter of fandom.

Over four days, Comic-Con offers hundreds of panels, celebrity signings, immersive activations, after-hours parties, and a massive exhibit hall, making it nearly impossible to experience everything.

Even veteran attendees have to make tough choices. Surviving Comic-Con isn't about doing everything; it's about prioritizing the experiences that matter most to you.

To make the most of your Comic-Con experience, here’s my guide to what to wear, what to pack, and how to plan. Let’s get into it:

PLANNING

Take a deep breath and repeat after me: You are not going to see everything, and that's okay. Seriously, there is so much happening that it's overwhelming. Your first stop should be downloading the official Comic-Con app on either the App Store or the Google Play Store.

Once there, head over to the “programming” tab, where you will see the schedule for each starting on Preview Night (Wednesday) and ending on Sunday. You can scroll through the app and save the panels, activations, and signings you’re interested in by tapping the star next to the panel name, or learn more by clicking the title.

Another invaluable resource is the SDCC Unofficial Blog. Their team spends all year covering Comic-Con and breaks down everything from Hall H line strategies to offsite activations.

I recommend using my Planning System: Must-Do, Would-Like-to-Do, and If-Time-Allows; that way, there’s always a backup plan. I would also plan to set aside a day to handle all the outdoor activations. These experiences are open not only to attendees but also to the public without badges. They involve long lines and patience, but I believe in you, and you can do it!

HALL H TIPS: Hall H is home to Comic-Con's biggest studio presentations and surprise announcements. If you are planning to attend, you may need to camp out overnight to snag one of the prized Hall H wristbands (the wristband colors change daily). You can also take a chance and arrive early in the morning to try to get one. The choice is up to you.

DON’T SKIP ARTIST ALLEY: One of my favorite traditions every year is wandering through Artist Alley. Sure, the big studio panels are exciting, but there's something special about meeting the artists behind the comics and artwork you love. Take your time, talk to the creators, and don't be afraid to buy a print or two. Some of my favorite Comic-Con souvenirs have come from Artist Alley, and every piece reminds me of a different year at the convention.

EXPECT YOUR PHONE TO BETRAY YOU: Comic-Con brings more than 100,000 people to downtown San Diego, and your cell service will probably remind you of that. Download tickets, maps, and reservation confirmations before heading out, and if you’re meeting friends, agree on a backup meeting spot. Trust me, “I’ll text you when I get there” isn’t always a solid plan during Comic-Con.

PACKING SMARTER: After spending time getting an idea of what you’d like to do at Comic-Con, let’s move on to what to bring with you. This can involve a lot of things, but let’s stick to the basics.

WHAT TO WEAR:

• Comfortable Shoes: Seriously. You'll easily walk several miles a day. Break them in before Comic-Con because blisters can ruin your weekend.

• Hat: You'll spend more time outside than you think.

• Breathable clothing: (shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, etc.)

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU:

• Backpack: You'll want something comfortable enough to carry all day and roomy enough for anything you buy.

• Refillable Water Bottle: San Diego is known for perfect weather, but it’s still summer and July; make sure you stay hydrated. There are several refill stations around the convention center to refill your water bottle.

• Sunscreen: Wear your sunscreen.

• Hand Sanitizer: No one wants to come home with the Comic-Con cold.

• Snacks: Convention food is expensive, and it's hard to find time to sit and eat.

• Portable Charger: Your phone will eventually die with all the videos/photos you’ll be taking

• Medication/Band Aids: Headaches, stomach aches, cuts, etc. can happen.

• Deodorant: Please. Do it for yourself and everyone standing next to you.

Optional: A foldable stool if you expect to spend a lot of time waiting in line, an umbrella for shade, or a portable neck fan (or handheld) to help beat the heat.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:

Trust me on this one: Leave the car at home if you can. Parking fills up fast, traffic gets backed up, and you'll probably end up walking a lot anyway.

MTS adds extra trolley service during Comic-Con, including this year's Magic: The Gathering Event Line, which will run every 15 minutes between the Balboa Avenue Transit Center and 12th & Imperial Transit Center from Thursday through Sunday. Grab a multi-day pass in the PRONTO app before you go, and you'll be set for the weekend. You can find route information and service updates in the MTS Comic-Con rider guide.

Coming from Los Angeles or Orange County? Amtrak is one of the easiest ways to get to Comic-Con. Trust me, it's a lot less stressful than sitting in traffic, paying for parking, and driving home after a long day at Comic-Con. The train drops you off at Santa Fe Depot, which is just a short walk or trolley ride from the San Diego Convention Center. For schedules and fares, visit the Amtrak website.

BUILD IN DOWN TIME

I know, it's tempting to go, go, go all day long. But trust me, your feet (and your sanity) will thank you if you slow down every once in a while. Grab a seat by the marina, duck into a hotel lobby with some air conditioning, grab a snack, and drink some water. Comic-Con fatigue is real, and taking even a 15-minute break can help you recharge for the rest of the day.

TALK TO PEOPLE

This is probably one of the most underrated parts of Comic-Con. Strike up a conversation with the people around you in line, ask cosplayers about their costumes (they've put in a ton of work!), or swap recommendations with fellow fans. Some of my favorite Comic-Con memories didn't happen inside Hall H or during a panel; they happened while waiting in line or chatting with complete strangers who loved the same fandoms I do.

REMEMBER WHY YOU’RE THERE

Years after my first Comic-Con, I still don’t see everything. I still miss panels, lotteries, and exclusives. But I’ve learned that’s not what Comic-Con is really about. The best memories usually aren’t the ones you planned—they’re the conversations in line, discovering a new favorite series, stumbling into an activation you didn’t know existed, or watching thousands of fans celebrate something they love together.

Disney on Monday unveiled a lineup of programming for D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the biennial gathering set to take over Anaheim from Aug. 14-16, 2026.

The event, presented by Visa, will span the Anaheim Convention Center and the Honda Center, offering panels, concerts, milestone celebrations and new reveals for fans of Disney’s film, television, theme park and gaming properties.

Full-day Fan Passes for Sunday remain available, along with Afternoon Only Fan Passes for all three days, according to Disney.

“At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the magic never stops,” said Michael Vargo, head of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. He said the event fills every hour with new experiences, from the moment doors open at the convention center to the final show at the Honda Center, and described it as a place where fans become part of the Disney story.

MUSIC AND MILESTONES

The three-day schedule includes a rare solo concert from composer Alan Menken, an eight-time Academy Award winner and Disney Legend. Broadway and animation performers will revisit Disney songs from the 1980s and ‘90s during the Disney Rewind Concert, and Emmy-winning, Grammy-nominated vocalist Seth MacFarlane will lead a tribute to Muppets music alongside other guests.

Anniversary celebrations will mark 75 years of “Alice in Wonderland,” 35 years of “Beauty and the Beast,” 25 years of the “Kingdom Hearts” video game franchise and 65 years of Marvel’s Spider-Man. The event will also include a conversation with the newest class of Disney Legends.

Additional programming includes the D23 Mousequerade costume contest, presented by AT&T, and a new Disney Experiences Auction.

HOW TO GET RESERVATIONS

Disney said access to select presentations and experiences at the Anaheim Convention Center will be distributed through a randomized process called the Reservation Selection Process, or Reservation RSP.

The reservation window opens Monday, July 20, at noon Pacific time and closes Friday, July 24, at noon Pacific time. Guests can rank their preferred offerings and request reservations for groups of up to six people for most programming.

Confirmed reservations will be sent by email starting Aug. 7. Disney said reservations are not guaranteed, but standby lines will be offered for presentations at the convention center’s event stages, Talent Central and most show floor experiences.

Shows at the Honda Center are open only to holders of the D23 Ultimate Fan Pass and D23 Ultimate Preferred Fan Pass. Disney said there will be no reservations or standby lines for Honda Center programming.

Each day at the Honda Center, fans will experience never-ending surprise and delight moments, performances, and announcements, as well as sneak peeks at the incredible films, shows, attractions, experiences, and more coming from Disney’s creative powerhouses and groundbreaking innovators.

Friday, August 14 – Disney Entertainment Showcase
Friday night, the world-class storytellers of The Walt Disney Company will take center stage at the Honda Center for the Disney Entertainment Showcase. Guests can expect surprise celebrity appearances, exclusive first looks at upcoming films and series, exciting new announcements, and unforgettable musical performances. The star-studded presentation will celebrate the stories audiences love while offering an exclusive preview of what's coming next across Disney's movies, television, games, and live stage productions.

Saturday, August 15 – Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase
Join host Neil Patrick Harris for a journey into the stories shaping the future of Disney Experiences around the world. Building on the ambitious projects announced in 2024, this year's showcase will take fans deeper into the creative vision behind what's to come, hearing directly from the Imagineers, storytellers, artists, and innovators bringing these experiences to life. Inspired by the Carousel of Progress, Neil will guide the show and lead engaging conversations with the people creating the future of Disney Experiences—complete with behind-the-scenes looks, special performances, exciting announcements, and a few surprises along the way.

HBO Max is returning to San Diego this summer with a series of interactive experiences, screenings and talent panels tied to its slate of original programming, the company announced.

The activations will highlight two new series — “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” and “Lanterns” — along with an advance screening of an upcoming episode of “House of the Dragon.”

“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” a Max Original comedy from Warner Bros. Television, debuts July 23. The series is set inside “The Comic Center of Pasadena,” the comic book shop featured in “The Big Bang Theory.” Starting July 23, HBO Max will host an interactive activation based on the shop, inviting fans to discover their “hero archetypes” through a narrative-driven experience that guides them through character-based decisions across multiple realities.

The series follows comic shop owner Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, as he tries to fix reality after breaking a device built by former “Big Bang Theory” characters Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally triggering a multiverse catastrophe. He is joined by his girlfriend, Denise, played by Lauren Lapkus; his friend Bert, played by Brian Posehn; and Barry Kripke, played by John Ross Bowie. The show is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Lorre, Zak Penn and Bill Prady created the series and serve as writers and executive producers. Kyle Newacheck is an executive producer and will direct multiple episodes.

“Lanterns,” from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, debuts Aug. 16. Also starting July 23, HBO Max will present an activation called the “Lanterns Training Headquarters,” where attendees can take part in hands-on challenges designed to test their fearlessness ahead of the show’s debut season.

The series is based on the “Green Lantern” comic books and follows John Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, a veteran Lantern, as the two intergalactic officers investigate a murder in the American heartland that carries cosmic implications. Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King co-wrote the pilot and serve as co-creators; Mundy is showrunner. James Hawes will direct the first two episodes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also directing episodes. Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt and Hawes are executive producers.

On July 25, HBO Max will host an advance screening of the sixth episode of the third season of “House of the Dragon,” the HBO Original series set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” The show, based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” follows the story of House Targaryen.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will return to San Diego Comic-Con this month with a panel and exhibition booth previewing its Los Angeles opening, set for Sept. 22.

The museum’s Hall H panel, “Inside the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art,” is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. July 23. Panelists will include Ryan Linkof, the museum’s senior curator and head of film programs; Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, co-founders of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios; and Jim Lee, DC’s president, publisher and chief creative officer. The panel will be moderated by actress Keke Palmer.

The panel is expected to offer a first look at upcoming museum content and film programming, along with discussion of narrative art and its influence on George Lucas and other artists, according to the museum.

The museum will also operate a booth on the convention floor from July 22 through July 26 during convention hours, where it plans to debut new merchandise for purchase. The booth is located at #2913-G.

Comic-Con runs July 23-26 at the San Diego Convention Center, with preview night July 22.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art was co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson to explore the tradition of storytelling through images, ranging from prehistoric cave paintings to contemporary screen art.

The museum is being built in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park in a 300,000-square-foot building designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects in collaboration with Stantec. The building is part of an 11-acre campus that includes a park designed by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA.

“The Prowler,” a psychological horror short film written, directed and edited by Puerto Rican filmmaker Christopher Piñero, has been selected for the LA Shorts International Film Festival, an event that qualifies for Academy Award and BAFTA consideration.

The festival will run July 30 through Aug. 12 at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

The film stars Latino actor Aaron Dominguez, known for his roles in “Only Murders in the Building,” “Shaft” and “The Inspection.”

“The Prowler” follows a quiet night that spirals into a fight for survival, exploring themes of fear and paranoia. It is Piñero’s latest work in the psychological horror genre, a longtime interest he traces to his childhood.

“’The Prowler’ began with a simple question: What if fear itself became the villain?” Piñero said. “I wanted to create a psychological horror story that keeps audiences questioning what’s real until the very end. Growing up between Virginia and Puerto Rico, I was surrounded by stories of the supernatural, folklore and urban legends that fueled my imagination from an early age. Those stories shaped the way I think about fear and continue to inspire the films I make. Seeing ‘The Prowler’ connect with audiences has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to share it with even more people through these festivals.”

The short previously screened at Panic Fest and the Chattanooga Film Festival, where it drew coverage from the horror website Bloody Disgusting and a positive review from Horror Buzz.

Piñero’s debut feature, “A Dark Place,” was distributed by Gravitas Ventures. His short film “Gone” premiered at the Oscar-qualifying Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival.

The teaser trailer for “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” a documentary about the band Oasis, is now available to download and share, Disney+ announced.

The release comes one year after the band launched its Oasis Live ‘25 tour in Cardiff, Wales, marking the group’s first live performance together in 16 years.

The documentary, produced by Magna Studios and presented by Sony Music Vision, was created by writer, producer and director Steven Knight, known for “Peaky Blinders” and “A Thousand Blows.” It was directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, who previously worked on “Shut Up and Play the Hits” and “Meet Me in the Bathroom.”

The film will open in select IMAX theaters and cinemas in September before streaming exclusively on Disney+ internationally. In the U.S., it will stream on Hulu and Disney+ later this year.

“Don’t Look Back In Anger” follows Liam and Noel Gallagher’s reunion tour, which the studio describes as one of the most anticipated rock ‘n’ roll comebacks in recent memory. The film includes rehearsal, backstage and onstage footage, along with the first joint interview between the Gallagher brothers in more than 20 years.

“The Oasis world tour united generations, cultures and countries and spoke to a broken world about reconciliation,” Knight said. “’Don’t Look Back In Anger’ is not only your ticket to the show — it’s a backstage pass and a seat at the table when Liam and Noel sit down together for the first time in 15 years and tell it how it is and how it was.”

The documentary was produced by Sam Bridger, whose credits include “Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now” and “Meet Me in the Bathroom,” and Guy Heeley, who produced “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.”

Executive producers on the project are Kate Shepherd, Marisa Clifford, Davud Karbassioun, Tom Mackay, Krista Wegener, Isabel Davis and Tim O’Shea.

The creative team also includes Oscar-winning sound mixers James Mather (”Top Gun: Maverick,” “Belfast”) and Tarn Willers (”The Zone of Interest”), cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos (”Belfast,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”) and editors George Cragg and Martina Zamolo.

An eight-episode limited anime series from Lucasfilm and Production I.G, “Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi,” will premiere Aug. 5, 2026, exclusively on Disney+ and Hulu, the studio announced. A trailer and key art for the series are now available to download and share.

Supervising director Kenji Kamiyama, director Shunsuke Tada and producer Hitoshi Ito unveiled the trailer and a teaser poster Thursday during a “Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi” panel at the Los Angeles Convention Center, part of Anime Expo 2026.

The series launches a new “Star Wars: Visions Presents” banner that will be used to tell longer-form “Star Wars: Visions” stories. It picks up shortly after the events of the “Visions” shorts “The Ninth Jedi” and “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope.” The new installment follows Lah Kara as she continues training in the ways of the Jedi under Margrave Juro. Kara embarks on a journey of self-discovery alongside Juro’s small fellowship of Jedi-in-training as they set out to save her father.

Tada is directing the series from a script by Mitsuyasu Sakai. Kamiyama is supervising director. James Waugh, Jacqui Lopez, Josh Rimes, Justin Leach and Mitsuhisa Ishikawa are executive producers. Ito and Kanako Shirasaki are producers, and Caroline Keller is co-producer.

The English-language dub features a returning voice cast that includes Kimiko Glenn as Lah Kara, Andrew Kishino as Juro, Masi Oka as Ethan, Patrick Seitz as Homen, JP Karliak as Gramps and Simu Liu as Lah Zhima. Neil Kaplan is reprising his role as the Narrator. New to the English cast are Feodor Chin as Gennoh, Young Mazino as Nawaam, Chase Sui Wonders as Tafflah and Keone Young as Kwana.

In the original Japanese-language version, returning cast members include Chinatsu Akasaki as Lah Kara, Tetsuo Kanao as Juro, Hiromu Mineta as Ethan, Hinata Tadokoro as Homen, Cho as Gramps and Shinichiro Miki as Lah Zhima. Akio Otsuka is reprising his role as the Narrator.

In the span of just one summer, the MLB has seen a potential young star shortstop shoot up the draft boards. James Clark from Santa Ana, California has turned a lot of heads after a very strong summer showcase circuit. He has jumped 28 spots in the span of one ranking update and performed exceptionally well at the MLB Draft Combine.

The left handed batting shortstop enjoyed a high school career at St. John Bosco where he averaged .364 behind the plate, with five homers and 41 RBI. On the defensive end, he shined with a .930 fielding percentage.

As a program under head coach Andy Rojo, St. John Bosco saw themselves win back-to-back Trinity League and CIF Southern Section Division 1 championships. Clark was a big factor in their success as he was named the Trinity League MVP.

At just the age of 18 years old, Clark credits his parents for where he is today. Miles III and Cheri Clark paved the way for their twin sons to chase their dreams. Clark’s father thanks his wife for his kids success. Cheri is a huge Los Angeles Dodgers fan and the reason why her kids fell in love with the sport.

Growing up in the Clark household, education was very important. James would go on to being a 4.1 GPA student. His teacher at St. John Bosco described the shortstop as a “very humble and very hard working” person on and off the diamond.

His impressive work in the classroom allowed him to initially commit to Princeton University but after reopening his commitment, the Clark twins have switched over to the Duke Blue Devils.

When looking at the major league level, Clark has looked up to Francisco Lindor because of the confidence and smoothens he plays with. Head coach Rojo likes to call Clark “Big Game James” as he has shown to be a fierce competitor and a silent killer at the plate. He has also being receiving praise from MLB analysts and former players like Harold Reynolds who described Clark as “one of the most exciting shortstops in the country”.

Next up for Clark is now the MLB Draft which is on July 11th. The young shortstop will hope to hear his name called and then have to make a big decision, sign with the MLB team after becoming a high draft pick or commit to ACC baseball for the Blue Devils.

Ricardo (Stephan James), aka Ricky has had a tough life. He was sent to prison at the age of 15, for murder in a robbery gone wrong. As the film begins we meet him the day he is released from prison at age 30. The world is a very different place compared to when he went to jail. It’s disorienting to say the least. Moving back home with his mom Joanne (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and younger brother James (Maliq Johnson), Ricky is determined to better himself and keep his nose clean. Of course, this isn’t easy. The combination of a dizzying amount of freedom and a crippling lack of options is frustrating. Directed and co-written by Rashad Frett with co-writer Lin Que Ayoung, Ricky is a solid piece of filmmaking to be sure but it plays it safe by not charting any new territory.

After being released, Ricky’s singular task is to reintegrate into society. He needs to make his support group meetings, find a regular job, and never miss a meeting with Angie (Donna Glaesener) his pit bull of a parole officer. Things start off with a bit of promise. Childhood friend Terrence (Sean Nelson) has hired him to work at his distribution center. But before you know it, Terrance has to let him go. Undaunted, Ricky has dreams of becoming a barber. He meets Jaz (Imani Lewis), an incredulous single mom with a tough exterior. Jaz asks Ricky trim her son’s hair and, eventually, trust is established.

We connect with Ricky as we see the struggles facing a newly released prisoner. This is something that the film does quite well. Our leading man soon learns that it takes more than good intentions to find clients, much less keep them as a regular source of income. His blue sky aspirations are met with hard realities. The truth is that everyone on the outside is living in their own sort of prison, hemmed in my age, health, circumstance, or addiction.

Ricky is a good film that could have been greater than it is. As writers, Frett with co-writer Ayoung do an adequate job putting our titular character through the wringer. We see his flaws in the way his sheltered, underdeveloped psyche interprets and processes day to day struggles. In once scene, a random comment from his younger brother sends Ricky into a senseless rage. But the competent script misses the chance to anything new to the table.

The good news is that the performances are amazing. James is fine as the lead. But the rest of the cast really steps it up with raw, emotional performances. Lewis‘ Jaz is a defensive and suspicious mom, yet you can see she has a soft heart. Johnson plays younger brother James with a certain brash ignorance of his brother’s perspective. Ralph‘s Joanne is a well meaning if terribly flawed mother who simply wants to save her son. But for me the standout was Glaesener as parole officer Angie. Her scenes hit the balance between cold reality and compassion with brutal honesty that the film needed.

While Frett‘s script for Ricky is pretty average, I was truly impressed with his work from the director’s chair. He captures certain subtleties, nuances between characters that often get missed. His staging of a particular car accident leaves you breathless and in shock. To be fair, the characters here are all wonderful. The message of being more accommodating to those trying to make good after serving a sentence is heard. But the story takes few chances and shows us nothing we haven’t seen before.
