Fullerton Baseball Continues Their Struggles Against UCLA

Fullerton continues to struggle at the the start of the regular season with another loss; this time against UCLA on Tuesday night 2-12.

Another early inning lead was given up by Fullerton, as they allow UCLA to score three runs in the second inning. It was UCLA’s second baseman Chase Strumpf, with the scoring with his solo home run. Right Fielder, Garret Mitchell, added another two runs himself with a RBI single.

After a 3-0 lead for UCLA, Fullerton began closing the gap scoring a run each in the third and seventh innings. Both scores came off of RBI singles from Mitchell Berryhill and Sahid Valenzuela. In the eight inning, it fell apart for the Titans as the Bruins went on a scoring spree. Michael Toglia’s home run snowballed into five total runs for the Bruins in a matter of minutes. Bruins lead 8-2 going into the final inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Titans gave up another home run and another four more runs. With the Bruins leading 12-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, there was not much that could change. With the game out of reach, the Titans lose to UCLA for their third straight loss.

Gavin Velasquez (0-2) got the start and therefore earned the loss for the Titans. UCLA’s Ryan Garcia (1-0) threw for 5.0 innings, giving up three hits and one earned run to get the win.

Cal State Fullerton is now just 1-7 on the season, as their losing streak of three games comes right after winning their first game of the season.

The Titans will look to start a new streak of winning on the road at Tulane. Fullerton will take on the Pelicans in a three game series, beginning on Friday, March 2 at 4:30 pm PT.
