The Los Angeles Galaxy continued their dominant start to Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League play with a 5-0 drubbing of Guatemalan side CSD Comunicaciones Tuesday at StubHub Center.
The win on Tuesday raised the Galaxy to a perfect 2-0 start to their Group D schedule, while Comunicaciones remains pointless with one loss.
Fans who were late to the game might have missed the opening goal of the match. In the fifth minute, Galaxy midfielder Giovani dos Santos dribbled down the right side with time to pick his head up and pick out a target for his cross. The Mexican’s cross found the left foot of Mika Väyrynen, who hammered the volley into the back of the net from the center of the box.
Just four minutes later, Comunicaciones goalkeeper Juan Jose Paredes committed a vital error that led to the Galaxy’s second goal.
Paredes attempted to pass it to his right fullback, but it wasn’t a clean hit and dribbled just a few yards away from Paredes. Galaxy striker Alan Gordon made a heads up play to pounce on the ball before Paredes could recover and easily tapped it into the empty goal to double the LA lead.
Comunicaciones went into halftime only down two, but LA subbed in captain Robbie Keane and put the game out of reach when they netted again in the 54th minute.
LA midfielder Kenny Walker threaded a gorgeous through ball to Keane, who trapped it at the top of the box and made a deceptive move towards goal. Keane’s move drew three Comunicaciones defenders, so the Ireland international slid it to the unmarked Gordon for his second easy goal of the night.
The Galaxy stamped the emphatic win with two late goals.
In the 87th minute, dos Santos beat the offsides trap and had Keane running with him for a two-man breakaway. Dos Santos laid it off for Keane to finish past the helpless Paredes.
Two minutes later, Walker finished off what was arguably his best game in a Galaxy uniform. Walker perfectly chipped the ball with the outside of his foot to a streaking Keane through the box. Keane corralled the ball on the right side of the box, and calmly placed it over Paredes for the 5-0 win.
With two more assists on the night, dos Santos has quickly formed chemistry with his new team, scoring two goals and recording four assists in his four matches since his debut on August 6.
The Galaxy will next return to MLS action when they face New York City FC on Sunday in a star-studded matchup at StubHub Center, while Comunicaciones will look to bounce back when they return to league play against Guastatoya on Saturday.
