Hulu‘s The United States vs. Billie Holiday directed by Oscar-nominated Lee Daniels and written by Suzan-Lori Parks stars Andra Day.

Day will portray the legendary singer/entertainer Billie Holiday in the film.

The film begins in New York City in the 1940s. It follows jazz singer Billie Holiday, as she grows up during the federal government’s war on drugs, which heavily targeted black individuals.

As Holiday becomes more successful in her music career, she uses her platform to further the civil rights movement. Through her music, she brings attention to racial injustice and the violent environment.

To stop the movement, they begin a drug investigation to prevent her from singing her controversial song “Strange Fruit.”

“Whether you are new to the story and legacy of Billie Holiday or know every note she ever sang, I do hope our celebration of this complex woman does justice to a great musical legend and civil rights activist whose artistry resonates as well today, as it did 80 years ago. Hulu releasing this film and giving it a platform to be seen nationwide is a blessing, because as recent events reveal, our country has much work to do in fulfilling its promise of a more perfect union,” said Lee Daniels.

“The United States vs. Billie Holiday” will be available to stream on Hulu starting February 26, 2021. Sierra/Affinity will continue to handle international sales on the film.
