“Dondé esta mi gente?”

When it comes to today’s Latin sound, there is one name that never fails to be listed; J Balvin.

Recently announced, the Reggeaton megastar will embark on a 23 city-tour, beginning on August 30th in San Juan, Puerto Rico. With stops in Miami, Toronto, New York City, Las Vegas and more before wrapping on October 26th in Los Angeles, CA. Tickets for the “Arcoiris Tour” went on sale last Friday, promising to be a spectacular event! with multiple chart-topping hits and groundbreaking visual production.

This past weekend J Balvin became the first Reggeaton artist to appear as a special guest on Saturday Night Live (SNL) and returning once again to The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon not just as a performer but as a guest himself.

Before joining reggae legend Sean Paul for a performance if their song ‘Contra La Pared.’ The star and host talked about Balvins record-breaking, track record. “It took 44 years,” is what Balvin said when talking about his incredible SNL performance. Fallon then went on to talk in astonishment about his headlining gigs, particularly his introduction to last years Coachella. Where he joined headliner Beyonce.

When ask how he ended up performing with Beyonce. Balvin said he was only given a five-hour notice, since it wasnt planned.

“I was laying in bed, watching TV and I get a text. ‘You want to join us at Coachella?’ And I’m like ‘who’s this?’ And they said ‘Its Beyonce’s people’ and Im like up, ‘whats up!'”.

This past April, he headlined his own Coachella performance to massive great reviews! From his stage displays, in collaboration with ‘FriendsWithYou,’ to his homage to the “O.G.” reggaetoneros, that came before him. Balvin dominated the festival. This monumental performance was a huge game changer for an overlooked community. Not only is this the first time the lineup included many Latino artists (at least eight more since last year’s festival) but also booked one as a headliner.

Born in Medellín, Colombia. José Álvaro Osorio Balvin is a citizen of the world. Growing up he was a fan of rock bands ‘Metallica’ and the revolutionary 90’s rock band ‘Nirvana.’ Whom Balvin says holds a special place in his heart. His personal style, which lead to a recent collaboration with global lifestyle brand ‘GUESS INC.’ Is inspired by ‘Nirvanas’ grunge look.

He has developed a distinctive musical style all his own. That pays reverence to the first-wave of Reggaeton stars from Puerto Rico, while fusing wider influences of hip-hop, mainstream pop, Dance Music and innovative global rhythms tied with lyrical inclusivity.

Last year in an interview with Complex Magazine. Balvin said that he has so many people who influence him, that he likes to take the best parts of them and “put them into practice.” What does that exactly mean? Well let’s look at the people he has credited as influencers. During his time here in the states as a teenager. He became in awe of rappers such as 50 cent and P. Diddy. Thus inspiring him to purse what ends up being a ground-breaking music career.

Like many artists looking to get a foot in the door, he released an 11-track mix tape in 2012; self-titled “J Blavin Mix Tape.” The following year he released his second studio album “La Familia” followed by a “Side B” in 2013.

Between his game-changing major-label debut album LA FAMILA, multiplatinum successor ENERGIA and several landmark singles such as Mi Gente, Safari, Ginza and more, J Balvin has won three Latin Grammy Awards, numerous Billboard Latin Music Awards, notched a Guinness World Record for the longest #1 run for a solo Latin single, and collected over TWENTY BILLION Total YouTube Views.

The music video for “Ginza” broke the record in 2016 for the most viewed Latin music video in the first 24hrs. A record only broken once again by Balvin himself, with the release of “Matchika” in 2017, which went No.1 globally within the first 24hrs.

“Matchika” featuring Aruban newcomer Joen and Brazillian megastar Anitta, who collaborated with Balvin on the single “Downtown.” Was, just one of three released singles from Balvins highly anticipated fourth studio album “VIBRAS.” The first global-hit track released, was “Mi Gente” which was later remixed with Grammy winning artist Beyonce.

In a statement following the announcement of “Matchikas” global success.

“The success of ‘Mi Gente’ has been a blessing, but one I worked very long and deliberately to reach – bringing our Latin roots to fans around the world, recording primarily in our Spanish language, but not limiting our creativity to thinking of just ‘Spanish’ music.”

Much can be said about Balvin and his success. But an undeniable pillar of his career is his veracity.

In March of 2018 the single ‘X’ with fellow reggaetón artist Nicky Jam. Reached nearly 300 million views on Youtube within a month. Most recently, that song won “Airplay Song of the Year” at the Latin Billboard Music Awards. Where upon acceptance, Jam thanked Balvin for bringing the song to his attention. “Quiero agradecerle a J Blavin que fue el que me trajo el tema. Yo necesitabe un sencillo y él me llamó y me dijo, ‘papi te quiero mucho te tengo una canción’ y ximo historia así que gracias papi te amo. Aprovecha este momento para darte las gracias.”

At the same award show Balvin performed two of his other collaborations. Most recently the hits; “Con Altura” with Rosalia and “Contra La Pared” with Sean Paul. The list of the artists collaborations is extensive. Along the way, Balvin has now worked with artists, such as Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Cardi B, Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, David Guetta, Juanes, Nicky Jam, Diplo/Major Lazer, Selena Gomez, Sean Paul, Anitta, Skrillex, Liam Payne, French Montana, Wisin & Yandel, Ozuna and more.

While many believe that Balvin seems to have the “midas touch.” Turning every track, he is on; into a bonified-gold standard hit! His secret to success, actually seems to be less royal and more honest.

“It took us 15 years to get here…My name is J Balvin from Medellin Columbia and I’m proud to be Latino.” (Coachella)

Throughout his entire career, J Balvin has stayed true to his music. Becoming the worlds first crossover artist, without changing his sound. Proving that music is universal regardless of language barriers. As he told Jimmy Fallon, when asked if its true on the importance to only performing his songs in spanish.

“Yes thats always been my dream, to really crossover in Spanish…its really beautiful the way people are reacting to our music even though they dont understand what im saying, they feel the vibe

His recent album VIBRAS debuted at #1. Giving birth to Latin music’s most-praised tour of 2018, that was hailed by TIME. Rolling Stone, Billboard and many more as: “One of the Best Albums of 2018.” While also propelling the Colombian star to frequent #1 global rankings on both YouTube & Spotify’s charts.

This year has already seen J Balvin perform in the opening segment of The Grammy Awards, named the Premios Lo Nuestro “Artist of the Year” for an unprecedented third consecutive year. Seen his genre anthem “Reggaeton” notch his 13th #1 Billboard single, and become the first male Latin music artist to launch his own fashion line with GUESS’ “VIBRAS” collection.

As Latin music’s leading representative on this year’s global festival season. J Balvin has already been named the first-ever Latin music artist set to headline Lollapalooza, after just delivering the first-ever Reggaeton set on the mainstage at Coachella. His August performance at Lollapalooza, will only further solidify Balvin as Latin music’s leading ambassador for major music festivals around the world.

J Balvins “ARCOIRIS” (‘Rainbow’) fall North American Tour, with special guest; Lyanno and Eladio Carrion. Begin on Friday August 30th in Coliseo De Puerto Rico, in San Juan, PR.
