Los Angeles, CA – The Lauryn Hill strode onto the Greek Theatre stage last Thursday night (October 20), only to be greeted by a perfect storm of fans awaiting her arrival. Hill reciprocated the love and asked excitedly, “How you doin’ tonight Los Angeles!?” With sunglasses covering her eyes, a big flowy long skirt, and an appropriate classic sheer long-sleeve, Hill walked in like a star and made her presence clear.
Hill had a few technical issues throughout her set, which at times made the crowd a little squeamish to watch this awkward tussle. Every few minutes she pointed and nodded to an offstage technician to try to salvage the difficulty. Even though there was visibly something going on, the problem must have only been occurring inside her and her backups’ ear pieces, because the sound through the speakers was on point and attendees kept cheering and loving every minute of Lauryn Hill. She performed the songs that brought her worldwide recognition such as “Doo-Wop (That Thing)”, “Fu-Gee-La”, “Ex-Factor”, and her rendition of Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly.”

Hill quietly battled the technical matter like the PRO that she is and remained emotionally present, amazing everyone in the house with her impeccable vocal ability to execute each note. When Hill raps, she is a lightning bolt striking the ground. During “Everything is Everything” she hits every word without taking a breath or missing a beat. For a moment, the concert felt like time blurred and rewound itself to the 1998 debut of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill because she evoked just as much energy and vocal rawness as ever before. Miss Lauryn Hill keeps it real as an artist by also involving herself in a concert series project titled, “The MLH Caravan: A Diaspora Calling!” which is a celebration of unity, culture, and artistic beauty throughout the African Diaspora. Each concert features special guest appearances as well.

It is easy to see why she is one of the most powerful influences in music.
