The world lost another great on Sunday as an announcement was made that David Bowie died at age 69. This came as a shock to most of the world as the cause of death was cancer, which Bowie had been battling for the last 18 months. This announcement came from Bowie’s management team via his Facebook page. “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer,” read the statement.

Bowie was known for his creativity as a singer, songwriter, and actor. From his first tour as “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars”, Bowie cemented himself as an act of pure art and epic standards. After rising to stardom in the late 70’s, Bowie spent the rest of his long career as a musician dedicated to constant innovation, creating different sounds with each of his albums. During this time he also took a dive into the film world, playing iconic characters such as Jareth the Goblin King in the 1986 hit “Labyrinth”. He also played Andy Warhol in “Basquiat”, as well as making an appearance in 2001’s “Zoolander”.

The sudden news of his passing has left a void in the world, and many celebrities and fans have been taking to social media to express their words, or lack thereof. Many were shocked to learn that the icon had been battling cancer for as long as he was, especially while keeping it all a secret. Now the world is left with the memories and inspiration that David Bowie broke down walls to be able to show the world. He not only reinvented himself throughout his career, but also the ideals of “normal” and what it meant to be truly different.

Rest in peace Starman, our condolences to his friends, family, and fans at this time.
