Los Angeles Sparks: Sparks Give Atlanta Dream Nightmares in 16 Point Win

Los Angeles SparksKristi Toliver leads the Sparks as she leads all scorers to end the three game home stand with a win over the Atlanta Dream, 79-63.

Toliver lead all participants with 19 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assist playing all 40-minutes of the contest. Atlanta’s Sancho Lyttle was second in scoring with 17 points and 4 rebounds.

For the Sparks this was the third straight win at home in the last four days and brings the team home record to 9 wins and only 1 loss at the Staples Center. This will bring them to a record of 13 wins and 6 losses just percentage points away from second place San Antonio.

This win would also snap a six game losing streak against Atlanta with two more games on the road before the Olympic break which starts after Thursday’s game against Indiana.

“I’m glad that’s done,” Sparks coach Carol Ross said. “I’m extremely proud of them. Everything’s going to get knocked to the mat in this league, but it’s how you get up, and I thought we responded to rest. I thought we responded to practice. I think we really focused in on these three home games against three quality opponents.”

Candace Parker ended the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Nneka Ogwumike continued her great play in the first half of her first season with 12 points and 3 rebounds.

“I feel real good it is really nice to get this three game home sweep,” said Ogwumike.  She would also say that the team would want to end July undefeated and was looking forward to play Phoenix again and Indiana for the first time this season.

The Sparks will now leave to Phoenix for a game on Tuesday, then end the first half of the season against the Indiana Fever. It will be the first time this season that both teams will meet. Then they will begin the Olympic break as the WNBA allows their athletes compete for their respective countries and will resume play on August 18.
