The annual tech and film and conference, SXSW, has now announced the cancellation of their March event due to coronavirus, which was expecting over 400,000 attendees over the course of March 13th to the 22nd.
Organizers wrote a blog post on their website, stating, “We are devastated to share this news with you.” They proceeded to give details. “The show must go on” is in our DNA, and this is the first time in 34 years that the March event will not take place.”
Organizers also mentioned, “there’s no evidence that closing SXSW or any other gatherings will make the community safer.” However, the city of Austin believes going forth with their cancellation will prevent a possible outbreak and protect their citizens.
SXSW is now looking for plans to reschedule, as they did not mention anything regarding refunds and any exceptions to their no refund policy. They are also taking action into creating a virtual experience, one where no one’s health is at risk.
With heavy hearts, SXSW will strive for better and continue what they love – “helping creative people achieve their goals.”
