Chairman and CEO, Mark Pedowitz, announced a hold on the Powerpuff pilot while speaking to reporters.
Last year the CW announced plans to turn the beloved 90’s animated series, The Powerpuff Girls, into a live-action reboot. Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault, were signed on to play Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, respectively.
The Powerpuff Girls, revolved around three kindergarten aged supergirls, who were created when Professor Utonium accidentally spilled a mysterious substance, “chemical x,” in his attempt to create the perfect little girls. While they may have been kindergarteners learning about personal hygiene and their A,B,C’s. These three little girls – made of sugar, spice and everything nice – would also dedicate their time to fighting crime and protecting the city of Townsville.
The live-action series would feature the girls as young adults, resentful over their missed childhood – which was spent fighting crime – and struggling when faced with the possibility of reuniting to help save the world.
When speaking to reporters during a press call. Mark Pedowitz, alluded to the reason behind putting a pin in the pilot for the Powerpuff. “The reason we do pilots is, sometimes things miss,” Pedowitz said. “We believe in the cast and in the studio Warner Bros. In this case, the pilot didn’t work. Because we see enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. It may have felt a little too campy and not rooted in reality. You learn things when you test things out. We felt, ‘Let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.’ This is a powerful property, it engages a lot of interest, and we want to get it right.”
Earlier in the week, rumors began to circulate that the script was leaked and featured adult content, sexual dialogue and a scene of extortion involving nude photos of Buttercup – played by Perrault. However when pressed for an answer, Pedowitz claimed to not have knowledge of the story.
While the pilot may be heading back to the drawing board. Pedowitz has faith in the show’s writers, Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier, executive show producer Greg Berlanti and its cast.
