With a low growl, Maul invites viewers to take a closer look at a galaxy reshaped by the Empire in “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord.” The first teaser trailer and poster for the animated series were released today, offering an initial glimpse of the planet Janix and the underworld maneuvering during the early days of Emperor Palpatine’s reign.
The series premieres with two episodes on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, followed by two episodes weekly, culminating in a finale on Star Wars Day, May 4. Set after the events of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord” follows Maul as he attempts to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. Along the way, he encounters a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan who may become the apprentice he needs in his pursuit of revenge.
Sam Witwer reprises his role as Maul, having previously voiced the character in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “Star Wars Rebels” and other projects. The voice cast also includes Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, and Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots. Moura and Ayoade will also appear in a Marvel Comics prequel series set on Janix that launches in March.
The series features stylized animation designed to reflect the gritty cityscape of Janix, blending modern techniques with traditional filmmaking methods, including painterly brushstrokes on glass and other physical elements.
