NEWS x MUSE Josslyn Glenn talks with the director of Seneca, Speaks Capri Wang at the first ever First Cut: Women Directors’ Fellowship held at The Montalbán Theatre.

The most formative changes often unfold in the subtlest moments. For 8-year-old Seneca, this moment arrives just before her stepmother gives birth—when she accidentally discovers the truth about her father’s infidelity.

This is not a story about trauma, but about the pause before everything shifts—the stillness before change. It explores the messy complexities of family, and the ways children make sense of the people they love most.
This is the bittersweetness of coming of age—not in the aftermath, but in the fragile moment just before.

First Cut: Women Directors’ Fellowship is an initiative by Broken English Productions, led by CEO Jolene Rodriguez, dedicated to providing first-time female directors with the opportunity to helm short films. This program amplifies new voices in filmmaking by offering mentorship, resources, and a platform to showcase their work. The inaugural event will feature screenings of three short films produced through the fellowship, highlighting the diverse talents and perspectives of emerging women directors.
