NEWS X MUSE Manny Gomez spoke with Julio Torres, the writer, director, and star for A24’s feature film, “Problemista”. The film is now playing in theaters. In the film, Torres introduces us to Alejandro who is an aspiring toy designer, who is also fighting the complicated immigration system as he is an immigrant from El Salvador, this is all showcased in a very modern and artistic view, which in turn delivers a very unique film that shows you a distinct perspective.

During our conversation about “Problemista”, Torres told us about why this was the first story that he decided to tell, and how the story about Alejandro parallels to what he has had to go through in his career. Torres also talks to us about his perspective and how he showcased some of the moments throughout the film in an artistic form. As a Salvadoran myself, it was an honor to chat with Torres about the film, you can check out the full interview above!

Alejandro is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador, struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in New York City. As time on his work visa runs out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast becomes his only hope to stay in the country and realize his dream. From writer/director Julio Torres comes a surreal adventure through the equally treacherous worlds of New York City and the U.S. Immigration system.
