Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst is set to join Sydney Sweeney in Lionsgate’s “The Housemaid’s Secret,” the sequel to the global hit “The Housemaid,” which has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide.

Paul Feig will return to direct. Producers returning for the project include Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman; Feig, producing through his Pretty Dangerous Pictures banner with partner Laura Fischer; and Sweeney, producing through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner. Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first book, will return as screenwriter for “The Housemaid’s Secret,” based on the novel by Freida McFadden. Michele Morrone will reprise his role as Enzo. Carly Elter, who oversaw the first film for Hidden Pictures, returns as executive producer, along with Alex Young of Hidden Pictures. Fifty-Fifty Films’ Kaylee McGregor will co-produce.

In “The Housemaid’s Secret,” Millie takes a housekeeping job for a woman she is never allowed to see, only to uncover the truth behind a locked door — and secrets darker than her own.

Erin Westerman, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said: “It is a privilege to bring ‘The Housemaid’s’ next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness. Opposite the ever-magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems.”

Chelsea Kujawa and Maria Ascanio are overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Robert Melnik negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio.

Dunst is an Oscar nominee for her role in The Power of the Dog, recently signed on to star in the sequel to A Minecraft Movie, set for release next June. She will also star in The Entertainment System Is Down, the new film from Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund. Her most recent starring roles include Roofman and Civil War. She is represented by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.
