The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced Thursday that it will present “Zoot Suit: Celebrating 45 Years with Director Luis Valdez and Edward James Olmos,” a special evening at The Ford commemorating the 45th anniversary of the groundbreaking film by playwright and director Luis Valdez.
Produced in partnership with the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, Self Help Graphics and Pachuco Car Club, the event will take place July 8 at 8 p.m. at The Ford and will bring together filmmakers, artists and audiences for a celebration of one of the most influential works in Chicano cinema.
Adapted from Valdez’s stage production, “Zoot Suit” tells the story of Henry Reyna and the 1942 Sleepy Lagoon case, set against the backdrop of the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles. Blending stylized storytelling, music and myth, the film explores identity, injustice and the power of cultural expression. First produced on stage in Los Angeles before becoming a feature film, “Zoot Suit” is widely regarded as one of the most influential portrayals of Chicano history and culture brought to the screen.
Edward James Olmos said: “Zoot Suit changed the way our stories could be seen on screen. It gave voice to a history that many people had never been taught and showed the beauty, strength and complexity of the Chicano experience. Forty-five years later, the film continues to inspire because it is about more than one moment in time. It is about identity, dignity and the responsibility we have to remember where we come from.”
The evening will honor the legacy of the film and its ongoing cultural resonance across generations. Hosted by actor, director and educator Cristina Frías, the celebration will feature appearances by Valdez and Olmos, who will reflect on the film’s creation, its place in Los Angeles history and its continued relevance.
In partnership with Self Help Graphics and Pachuco Car Club, attendees will have the opportunity to bring articles of clothing or purchase items to be screen-printed live, as well as view vintage automobiles evoking the era depicted in the film. The evening will open with a Pachuco Boogie tribute showcasing period fashion, with special guests including Dan Guerrero, son of Lalo Guerrero, who popularized the iconic song. Guests are encouraged to dress in period-inspired attire.
Frías, a Chicana actor, director, educator and arts advocate, recently portrayed Dolores Reyna in a production of “Zoot Suit” and has collaborated with Center Theatre Group, Pasadena Playhouse, South Coast Repertory, the Getty Villa and the LA Phil.
