MUSE TV recently sat down with director Yibing Jiang and animation director Jason Keane from the animated short film, WindUP.
At a time when people around the world are isolated, craving connection and preoccupied with the health and well-being of loved ones, a father tries to connect with his unconscious daughter through a favorite childhood tune. To do this, he plays a windup music box over and again in the hope that she will hear it, and that it will guide her back to him. Simultaneously, his daughter follows the melody in her dreams and searches for a way to get back home. It’s beautiful to watch the juxtaposition of the father’s emotions against the daughter’s memories. It truly is a testament to the power of music and the human spirit.
“Windup was challenging as it was initially a POC which meant we were on a limited budget. The majority of the team was part-time, everyone was collaborating remotely from all over the world, and my producing partner and I both speak English as a second language. This process was further complicated when COVID 19 struck in the last month of production and the team began working from home,” said Yibing Jiang.
